One of the deepest and most powerful ways to heal and rejuvenate your human physiology is to sleep. Yet sleep disorders generally increase with age, especially in the modern world. And many older adults give up on getting seven to nine hours of quality sleep per night because they feel frustrated. When sleep eludes you, do you give up? Do you throw up your hands and surrender to not having sleep? Or, instead, do you double down on sleep hygiene while attempting to get to the root of the problem? Knowing that sleep is critical to healthy aging and especially to optimal cognitive health is something we should remember and continually remind ourselves of. Dr. Dale Bredesen tells his ReCode patients, “We’re going to treat you now like a competitive athlete.” And competitive athletes know how much enough high quality sleep affects sports performance for the better. And the opposite is also true; when athletes don’t get enough sleep, it causes a noticeable decline in their athletic ability. For this reason, professional athletes that encounter sleep problems are referred to a sleep specialist or health coach because of the critical nature of sleep. As you age, it might not be a bad idea to embrace Dr. Bredesen’s approach to sleep health. Try to think about approaching sleep as if your career and daily performance depended on it. The truth is that advice is correct. And it is very possible to change your sleep habits and to sleep well, even later in life.

Grandmother of the Glades
The legacy of Marjory Stoneman Douglas lives on because she took a stand for nature. Known as the Grandmother of the Glades, she was born in 1890. She first learned about the Florida Everglades as a reporter for the Miami Herald, when she was sent by her father, the founder of that newspaper, to report on the vast wet swamp-like land in the expanding area around Miami. One day her father assigned her to write a story on the first woman in Florida to enlist in WWI.
